Play as Luigi
Finish the game, then save it. Now select the saved game and hold
down the L and R buttons then hit A. Luigi is now
available.
Play as Luigi without finishing the game
Hold L+R and press A on the file you want to play. Now in the
game you will be Luigi.
Unlock special backgrounds
Finish the game with a path to every mushroom hut and a blue
mushroom path will appear in World 1. It has the starting theme
and 3 new backgrounds that cost 20 star coins each. A fifth theme
can also be bought once you've cleared paths to mushroom huts in
every world.
Unlock unlimited toad house items
Finish all the levels and lettered bonus levels in the game. Save
your game.
Unlock extra toad houses
At the end of levels, jump on the flagpole when the final two
digits of your countdown timer are the same. Eg for red houses
jump on at 11, 22 or 33. Green jump on at 44, 55 or 66. Orange
jump on at 77, 88, or 99.
Unlock Power-ups
For extra power-ups go to the first world and play the stages
with the red winged question mark blocks.
Warp to world 5
There is a warp pipe that takes you straight to world 5 from the
world 1 tower. When you are in the hidden room with the second
star coin, there is a small gap in the upper right corner of the
room. Jump into the gap to get to the hidden area and smash the
invisible blocks as soon as you enter. Shell mario can go even
further and reach the warp.
Unlimited lives
Get as many 1-ups as you like by doing the following. Go to the
pipe at the end of World 1-4 and kick the koopa shell. It will go
back and forth between the pipe and the wall. Jump every time the
shell is about to hit you and it will kill the enemies that keep
appearing. This eventually awards you extra lives.
Warp Zone Cannon locations
Hidden throughout the game are secret warp cannons, accessible
through secret exits. When you find these, a number will be on
the cannon. This represents the world number it will take you to.
Here are all the warp cannon locations we know of:
World 5 Warp #1: Secret exit in World 1 Tower.
World 5 Warp #2: Secret exit from Stage 2-A.
World 6 Warp: Secret exit from the World 3 Ghost House.
World 7 Warp: Secret exit from the World 4 Ghost House.
World 8 Warp: Secret exit from the World 5 Ghost House.
Warp Zone Cannons
World 5 Warp #1: Take the secret exit from the World 1
Tower.
World 5 Warp #2: Take the secret exit from Stage 2-A.
World 6 Warp: Take the secret exit from the World 3 Ghost
House.
World 7 Warp: Take the secret exit from the World 4 Ghost
